The 1998 amendments to the SFR legislation (1998 Sportfishing and Boating Safety Act) called for a “national framework for a public boating access needs assessment, which may be used by States to conduct a public boating access needs survey in their state and implement a plan that ensures there are and will be public boating access adequate to meet the needs of recreational boaters on its waters.” The recently completed national first of its kind survey, developed by Responsive Management on behalf of SOBA and its partners, has a survey tool that will identify state public boating access needs and assist states in developing a state plan to adequately meet recreational boating need into the future. This national survey will also provide baseline information to compare against future surveys.
